Real Madrid Manager Odds: Zinedine Zidane Looks Set to Be Fired

When Zinedine Zidane led Real Madrid to a third straight Champions League triumph in May 2018 it’s fair to say that the Frenchman was the toast of the town in the Spanish capital. Five days after they defeated Liverpool in Kiev, the former playing legend decided to quit the club.

A poor season for the Bernabeu side followed and two managers were axed, Santiago Solari and Julen Lopetegui, and Zidane was offered a return to the La Liga side in March but it’s fair to say that things haven’t quite worked as many would have hoped.

Zidane has seen his side lost 5 of the opening 20 matches of his second spell and have looked a shell of the side that was led by Cristiano Ronaldo to great heights.

Now the odds of a new manager being brought in by president Florentino Perez are shortening by the day.

The current favorite comes in the form of Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino, with the Argentine being a 7/4 bet with Paddy Power.

The Argentine has arguably done as much as he can be expected to do at Spurs, taking the North London club to a Champions League final last May but not getting any closer to Premier League rivals Liverpool and Man City.

Most sportsbooks have Jose Mourinho down as a second favorite with the former Chelsea and Man United manager being down to as little as 2/1 with Betfair and of course the ‘Special One’ has been manager at Real Madrid before and that continuity may help the Portuguese manager secure a return to the Spanish giants.

A number of former players have also been linked with the potentially vacant spot with legendary striker Raul, midfield battler Guti and defender Fernando Hierro all being named as possible replacement should Zidane be axed.
